Using Zoom effectively is important when attending orientation, BLC sessions, and other trainings provided by BloomBoard and our coaches.
Setting up your screen
To maximize your participation in a Zoom session, you will want to set up your screen so that you have a working tab set on one side and Zoom on the opposite side.
Open the BloomBoard platform in one tab and open any additional documents or resources you need as separate tabs.
Your internet browser should cover approximately ½ of the screen so that you can view the Zoom screen on the opposite side.
When the meeting facilitator admits you to the Zoom session, you are encouraged to resize your screen. By resizing you will be able to view the content shared by the meeting facilitator and your tab set simultaneously.
First exit full screen mode by pressing the ESC button or by double clicking. Then, resize the Zoom window, and move the Zoom window to the right side of the screen.
By resizing you will be able to view the content shared by the meeting facilitator and your tab set simultaneously. Click this link to view a video that demonstrates how to set up your screen with your tab set on the left ½ and the Zoom session on the right ½ of the screen.
Tools in Zoom
At the bottom of the Zoom window you can access Mute/Unmute, Start/Stop Video, Share Screen, and the three dots for more features. By clicking More you can toggle the Chat on and off as needed. You can also view Participants.
This Zoom video demonstrates how to use Basic In-Meeting Navigation.
Changing your name in Zoom
During a Zoom session, you may or may not know the other participants. By having your first and last names visible to the other participants, you will be able to better communicate with meeting participants. Having your first and last name will enable meeting facilitators to accurately track attendance for each session.
- Click the More button with 3 dots in the bottom right
- Select Participants
- Find and select your name in the Participant list and click the blue More button
- Select Rename to edit your screen name as needed.
- Check Remember Me for future meetings.
Helpful Hint: The Basic In-Meeting Navigation video referenced above demonstrates how to change your name in the segment beginning at 1:48.
Chatting in Zoom
During a Zoom session, you may send or receive messages from other meeting participants.
- Click the More button with 3 dots in the bottom right.
- Select Chat.
- When the Chat panel is open you will be able to view messages and/or links shared during the session.
- You may also send messages to Everyone in the session or an individual by selecting the participant's name in the dropdown menu.
This Zoom video fully demonstrates how to use chat and reactions features.
Helpful Hint: The Basic In-Meeting Navigation video referenced above demonstrates how to chat in the segment beginning at 2:10.
Sharing your Screen
During a Zoom session, the meeting facilitator will use the Share Screen feature enabling you to view the slide deck, the BloomBoard platform, and other resources to support your learning. At times participants may be asked to use the Share Screen feature.
- Click the green Share Screen button at the bottom of the Zoom window
- Follow the on screen prompts to select the correct view to share
